THE NATIONAL Environmental Management Authority has finally put in place noise pollution regulations making it an offence to release noise above 109 decibels. The main offenders are discos and born-again outdoor churches. Sometimes the sound can be deafening even miles away and keeps people awake the whole night. These noise polluters have made many people’s lives a misery and brought down property values in their neighbourhood. But no one has been able to do anything because of the lack of legislation. Now they face fines of up to sh18m. They do not need to go out of business, they just need to reduce the noise that they release outside their buildings so that they do not disturb their neighbours excessively. KCC and NEMA should now launch a fierce crackdown on noise pollution in Kampala. Ends
