Over 10 suspects detained at Hoima Police have escaped from Police cells.

By Amlan Tumusiime Over 10 suspects detained at Hoima Police have escaped from Police cells. This has caused panic and fear among the residents. The suspects who included defilers and rapists escaped last week during a heavy downpour. The acting District Criminal Investigation Officer, Soco Mugungu, said the Police was investigating the cause of the escape. He said the Police were on a search for the suspects. Mugungu said the suspects passed through the cell window before escaping. “It is true, nine suspects out of fourteen who were in the cells have escaped,” Mugungu said. “They made their plan as it rained but we are seriously hunting for them” he added. Mugugu declined to give their identities saying that it would jeopardise Police investigations. “We cannot tell the press details about our investigations because their reports might leak information to the suspects,” he said. Sources said other suspects who remained in the cells said their colleagues said they would beat them to death in case they raised an alarm. Mugungu however said one of the suspects was re-arrested and taken to court where he was charged with unlawful escape. Sources said an unidentified man who was lynched by a mob on Friday was one of the suspects. Ends
