Some 60 students of Uganda Christian University, Mukono, have named their hall of residence “Afghanistan” because of the poor conditions there. The hall is located in the premises of the former Vocational Training School. The students have complained of scarcity of water and the long distance to both the dining and lecture rooms. Through their Governor, Chris Mwebaza, they said that they no longer take breakfast and evening tea. “The dining hall is too far and by the time we reach there for breakfast, time has run out and we must go for lectures,” Mwebaza said. “This is land of torture and it is real Afghanistan because people never suffered in the promised land” he added. He said they approached the Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Noll who later refused to meet them. “He said that someone had advised him not to meet us to find a solution to our problems,” one student said. However, another student said that the VC had put a mobile phone in the hall of residence for easy communication but it was stolen. The VC promised to solve the problems while addressing the guests at the second graduation ceremony. Mwebaza said that the dean of students had assured them that some accommodation money would be refunded. ends
