A HEALTH charity organisation, Taifa Community Care Project, has imported 470,000 flavoured condoms and another half a million non-flavoured ones for sex workers. Charles Wendo reports that Mr. George Oryang, co-ordinator of the organisation that has its head office in London, said yesterday the condoms would be distributed free of charge to sex workers through their representatives who have received training. “We bring these condoms specifically for sex workers because that is what our project is about. A lot of their clients like oral sex. Without the proper facilities, a lot of them may end up doing it without condoms and get throat infections,” he said. The condoms imported from Britain have the chocolate, strawberry, banana, vanilla, blueberry, minty or mixed flavours. The flavoured ones are for oral sex while the non-flavoured are for penetrative sex. “Once a man is erected, the flavoured condom is slipped on, then the woman sucks it. That is why it is flavoured,” Oryang said. He said the condoms would help reduce the risk of HIV spread amid anticipated increase in sexual activity around Christmas and end of year. He estimated the number of sex workers on Kampala streets at several hundred. Challenged to comment on views that the distribution of condoms to sex workers would encourage prostitution, Oryang said, “We don’t bring them from their homes. We find them on the streets and say ‘if someone approaches you, use a condom’. We just want them to do it safely.” He said the intervention would protect the sex workers as well as the numerous men who buy their services. “I have a quotation from a prostitute that ‘if we told all that we knew in the course of our duty, we would sink hundreds of marriages, destroy thousands of businesses and put everyone at war with each other,’” he said.
