THE construction of the Old Kampala Mosque resumed yesterday after 24 years.

By Solomon Muyita THE construction of the Old Kampala Mosque resumed yesterday after 24 years. The construction is funded by the Libyan government whose leader, Col. Muammar Gaddafi, pledged to complete the proposed Uganda Muslim headquarters when he visited Uganda early this year. The Libyan Ambassador to Uganda, Abdallah Bujeldin, inaugurated the construction when he drove a grader to clear debris dumped in the site by the former contractor, CONCORP. Muslim leaders led by the Mufti, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje, chanted, ‘Allah Akbar (God is great),’ with their hands raised in the air. Tabliqs leader Amir Sheikh Sulaiman Kakeeto, and the international coordinator of the project, Hajji Habib Kagimu attended the function. “This is great. We had agreed in the Supreme Council to work hard to get the project started next-year, but I am relieved to see it started now,” Mubajje said. Bujeldin said the project was part of Libya’s role in liberating Africa. He called for unity in Islam. “This is just a gift from Col. Gadaffi that has no strings attached. Its completion will add on Uganda’s skyline and strengthen the unity of the Muslims in the country,” Mubajje said. Ends
