POLICE in Masaka on Tuesday shot dead an armed thug and recovered a sub machine gun.

The Police officer in- charge of criminal investigations in the district, Mr. John Bwango, told The New Vision, the thug was one of the six gunmen who had mounted a roadblock at Kyereme near Mbiriizi trading centre in Lwengo sub-county. Bwango said the gunmen robbed passengers of cash and property. The passengers were travelling in taxis. Sources said the thugs also robbed several vehicles but one of the drivers identified as Abbas Magembe escaped and drove to Mbiriizi police post and reported the matter. Police identified the dead thug as Aloysious Muyonga a resident of Mbiriizi trading centre on Masaka-Mbarara highway. Muyonga was shot in the chest. The passengers who were robbed included Patrick Muyanja a technician in Kampala who lost cash and a bag, Cranimer Kaddu a mechanic of Najjanankumbi, Magembe a driver of a Toyota Corolla who lost sh35,000, clothes, an identity card and a passport and Banku Tabu, a driver of a G-Fuso who lost sh20,000. The body of Muyonga lay in Masaka mortuary. Bwango said investigations were still going on. Ends.
