Museveni mourns Lacor's Lukwiya

PRESIDENT Museveni has said the Government will compensate all health workers who died of Ebola while on duty.

By Justin Moro and Dennis Ojwee PRESIDENT Museveni has said the Government will compensate all health workers who died of Ebola while on duty. "The Government will ensure that all families of health workers who died of Ebola, including that of Dr. Matthew Lukwiya, will be compensated," he said in a speech read by health minister Dr. Crispus Kiyonga to mourners at Lacor Hospital. Lukwiya, the Lacor medical superintendent, died of Ebola yesterday morning. "The greatest honour to Matthew Lukwiya and all health workers is to intensify our efforts and fight Ebola," he said. Museveni said the Government would do everything possible to fight Ebola. He donated sh5m to Lukwiya's family. "I call upon all Ugandans to be alert about Ebola and every Ugandan should play a role to fight the disease," he said. Lukwiya was buried at 4:00pm at Lacor hospital. About 200 people, including the director general of Uganda Health Services, Prof. Omaswa, higher education state minister Mrs Betty Akech Okullo, Lt Col. Walter Ochora, Gulu Resident District Commissioner Peter Odok w'Oceng and and LC5 boss Walter Ochora, attended the ceremony. Museveni said, "I send my sincere condolence and that of the Government to the family of Dr Lukwiya and all the families of those health workers who lost their dear ones due to Ebola disease. I have been following the Ebola epidemic since its outbreak and I have instructed the health minister to make public statements about Ebola which has so far claimed the lives of more than 100 people including 12 nurses, one doctor, one driver. I wish to salute the community workers for their dedication to fight the disease since its outbreak." Ends.
