Project Director Abbey Lutaya, also National Council of Sports (NCS) general secretary, said yesterday the opening ceremony would take place at Rock Garden Café-Speke Hotel on January 4 at 7.00 pm. The January 3-10 championship will be played at the newly refurbished Lugogo and Kyambogo ovals. "The nine foreign teams by coincidence arrive on January 3 and Kampala business tycoon Sudhir Ruparelia, a great friend of cricket, will host the opening ceremony at Rock Garden Café," Lutaya said. Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia, Sierra Leone from West Africa, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Kenya from East Africa and Namibia from Southern Africa will stay at Tourist Hotel. All foreign teams leave on January 10. The International Cricket Council-sanctioned championship, is also a 2002 U-19 World Cup qualifier where the winner will represent Africa. All the teams have named their squads for action that would be supervised by ICC Africa development officer Hoosain Ayoub and ICC project officer Chris Tetley. Uganda's team, which won the East and Central Africa quadrangular, has been under intensive training under former Kenyan international Tom Tikolo and national coach William Kamanyi. Ends.
