THE Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) presidential candidate, Olara Otunnu, has promised to revive Uganda railways.

He said there no economy in the world can prosper without a railway network because it is the cheapest means of transport for business.

Otunnu said during the UPC regime, farmers could access markets even as far as the East African coast.

“I am dismayed to see that part of the railway line on the Mbale-Soroti highway has been sealed with tarmac,” he said.

Otunnu was addressing rallies in the sub-counties of Kachumbala, Kidongole, Kolir and Malera in Bukedea district on Monday.

He said the Government’s reluctance to re-establish the railway line had given thieves an opportunity to vandalise it.

“The only party with the passion and commitment to serve Teso is UPC,” he said.

Otunnu added that if voted into power, the UPC would re-introduce strong support to the farmers by giving them incentives like seeds and loans at low interest rates.

He said the only way of bringing back prosperity among Ugandans is through agriculture because it is the backbone of the economy.

“Many of the farmers cannot afford the basic needs because they realise nothing from their products yet the cost of living is rising everyday,” he said.
