EDITOR: There are many parents and guardians out there scrambling to get their loved ones to an 'A-class' school and will do all it takes to achieve that. However, besides academic excellence and performance of the school, there is one other factor parents ought not to ignore as this could make or break their child’s future.

The issue of morality and discipline in the school is essential. My family is grappling with the pain of a drug-addicted brother due to a lax disciplinary policy at a prominent school in Jinja.

A humble Christian boy who joined the school in Senior One came out after four years a messed up drug addict, violent and wasted! And to think now that I made numerous trips back and forth to ensure he was finally admitted to this 'great' school makes me even more angry as I was only focusing on the academic merits of him joining this school without thinking of the discipline of the school.

It is no coincidence that all the four boys who were close friends are today addicts and my research about the school has led to one conclusion—the free movement policy by the school has 'killed' our loved ones. The school is not fenced and on weekends students are free to move out as long they are back in school by 6:00pm.

Without a monitoring mechanism, who knows what the students do or where they go when they leave the school? Whom do they interact with? Tell me your friends and I will tell you who you are!

My brother attained knowledge from the school but has lost the will to apply it because his focus is most concerned about his next fix than anything else— including his education! So parents, a word to a wise man is enough. Take heed as you don’t want to experience the daily trauma of putting up with a violent drug addict.

Adequately study the school where you are sending your child. High grades alone are not enough nor will they be useful to your child if the school has no rational policies.
