THE NRM mayoral candidate Peter Sematimba has contributed sh3m towards the renovation of the 90-year old St Pauls Cathedral, Namirembe.

The money was in fulfilment of a pledge that Sematimba made last year.

Receiving the money at his office on Tuesday, the Bishop of Namirembe Diocese, the Rt. Rev. Wilberforce Kityo Luwalira urged candidates vying for different posts to emulate Sematimba and fulfill their pledges once they win the seats.

Kityo cautioned candidates against seeking public office for private gain.
He said God would bless only those candidates who had his people at heart.
Luwalira also cautioned politicians against inciting violence.

Namirembe Diocese hired a consultancy firm to assess the cost of renovation and it was established that sh2b was needed for the exercise.

The current building, which is the forth church and the third cathedral on the hill was built in 1915 replacing a structure built in 1904 that was struck by lightening.

The first church was constructed in 1890 and the second one built a year later was destroyed by a storm. The Bishop appealed to the congregation to support the initiative.

He asked God to protect all the candidates throughout the campaign period.

Sematimba promised to help renovate all the traditional churches and mosques in the city, once he becomes mayor.
“I shall mobilise funds as lord city mayor to renovate all of them. It should be every one’s responsibility because we all pray to God,” he added.
