MAKERERE University has risen from the 15th to the 10th position in the best performing institutions of higher learning in Africa.

The top nine universities are in south Africa, with the University of Cape Town at number one.

Makerere is now one of the best African universities, according to Webometrics, an organisation that monitors university performance worldwide.

The improvement is an indicator of the university’s commitment to disseminate research outcomes.

Of the over 25 universities in Uganda, Makerere is the only one that made it to the top 100 in Africa. Globally, it was ranked 1,402, up from 2,685 of the 12,000 universities examined last year.

Makerere vice chancellor, prof. Venancius Baryamureeba, attributed the improvement to their conscious effort to let the world know what they were doing in the field of research.

“This ranking mainly considers online research. For years, we didn’t go out to disseminate our research,” he said.
