Police kill two armed robbers

TWO suspected armed robbers were on Thursday afternoon killed by Rapid Response Unit (RRU) operatives in Mbarara town.The suspects died during an exchange of fire with the RRU officials, who attempted to arrest them.

TWO suspected armed robbers were on Thursday afternoon killed by Rapid Response Unit (RRU) operatives in Mbarara town.The suspects died during an exchange of fire with the RRU officials, who attempted to arrest them.

The four suspects were travelling in a stolen vehicle when they were intercepted by RRU officials at Nyamityobora forest reserve before they opened fire on the RRU operatives.

The dead were identified as Umar Mugisha, of Kidongo, Mbarara municipality and one Mworozi, a resident of Kashozi in Bushenyi district, their colleague, Saidi Nampara, 45, a resident of Kakoba was arrested while one unidentified man escaped with a gun.

South western region Police Spokesperson, Polly Namaye, said Mugisha and Mworozi had terrorised the region for a while.

Mugisha was a notorious robber who recently escaped from Kireka RRU prisons where he was detained for the alleged murder of Alex Turyasingura last year.

He was also wanted for a connection in the murder of Ibanda businessman, Gerverse Mukama.

The death of Mukama prompted, the Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura to take charge of the activities in western Uganda early this year.

Saidi Nampara, the lone survivor, was taken to Mbarara Police station pending investigations. He is also said to be a hard core criminal who was found in illegal possession of a fire arm in Nakivale refugee camp in Isingiro district.

During day he sells roast chicken in Mbarara town.
