THE bulk of Uganda’s team at the Africa Nations soccer Championship (CHAN) finals will form the core of Cranes side for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

Uganda is out of the tournament going on in Sudan, but coach Bobby Williamson has called for support to the players who he believes hold the key to Uganda’s success.

Cranes went down to Algeria 2-0 and 1-0 to hosts Sudan in the group stages.

The successive defeats saw Williamson’s team bow out of the tournament.

They were joined by Ghana, who lost to Zimbabwe after earlier being beaten by South Africa.

Williamson is optimistic his players can perform later.

“They are young players, most of them have had less than a month at international duty,” the Scot explained.

“These lads have only been playing in Uganda but they are promising.

“They are the future Cranes stars and they need the support of all Ugandans. Do not abuse them, but do not also over rate them.”

The team has an average age of 20.

Williamson, who will also be in charge of the national U-23 squad with former internationals Sam Ssimbwa and George Ssemwogerere as his assistant, believes that the team currently in Khartoum will remain intact.

In addition to the looking at the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, Williamson wants to absorb the players in the CHAN event in the U-23 team for the Olympic qualifiers. The Olympic Games are due 2012 in London.
