EDITOR: Yesterday New Vision published a letter entitled "NSSF, focus on sensitisation rather than campaigns". The letter, by Johnson Mbaziira, was about the ongoing whistleblowers campaign by the National Social Security Fund.

NSSF would like to thank Mbaziira for appreciating our efforts to ensure that employers contribute for their employees.

In the implementation of the whistleblowers' campaign, NSSF's confidentiality is assured. No employee of the school mentioned in the letter has reported to us that he or she has been victimised.

Over 130 defaulters have been reported since the campaign started. We launched the campaign to encourage employees to provide information about any employer not remitting their contributions. Previously, some employers would not remit contributions to NSSF for their employees, while others would cheat them by deducting money without remitting it.

The cash reward of sh100,000 is meant to encourage employees to provide this information, in addition to recovery of all their contributions the employers had not paid.

Through this initiative, the employees are taking responsibility for their social security. NSSF has been carrying out sensitisation through the print media and outdoor.

We also have had sensitisation campaigns on 26 radio stations in six languages across the country. We also have a fully functional and updated website with all the required information.

Our current advertising strategy is to first ensure the members’ contributions are deducted and remitted in order for them to be assured of social security.

We have changed our business model where our branch staff now go out to build and maintain relationships with all employers. This focus is to ensure employers fulfil their obligations as spelt out in the NSSF Act.
