THE Electoral Commission (EC) has cancelled the election of the directly elected Members of Parliament for Okoro county in Zombo district.

The cancellation came barely seven days to the polling day. Richard Nsube, the Zombo district returning officer, said the elections were cancelled following to the death of one of the candidates.

“Following the death of Thomas Acamfua, one of the candidates for Okoro county, the EC advises all candidates to stop campaigns until a fresh date is communicated,” Nsube noted in a letter to the Zombo district Police commander, which was also copied to the officer in charge of electoral offences, political parties and the aspiring candidates.

He said a residual election would be conducted for Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party to replace its lost candidate. Nsube said a residual election is an election done by a party to replace lost candidates.

Thomas Acamfua, 61, the FDC flag-bearer for Okoro county, passed away on February 2 at Angal Hospital after succumbing to diabetes.
