LACK of clean water remains a major challenge to the people of Kiruhura, Ibanda, Isingiro, Mbarara and Ntungamo districts.

In Ibanda district, two candidates are in the race for the LC5 chairperson’s seat. They are Melichiadis Kajwengye, the NRM flag-bearer and Godians Ahisibwe, an independent.

The biggest problem LC5 candidates need to address in Ibanda district is lack of clean water for domestic use and for livestock. The problem affects most people in Ibanda North constituency, who depend on boreholes, many of which are non-functional.

In Mbarara district, Deus Tumusiime (NRM) is tussling it out with independent candidate Grace Muhirwe, whom he defeated in the primaries.

The people of Mbarara also want better roads and electricity, especially in villages and drugs in health centres.

In Isingiro district, the incumbent and NRM flag-bearer, Ignatius Byaruhanga, faces Domnic Kashaki, an independent candidate. Kashaki lost to Byaruhanga in the NRM primaries.

The people of Isingiro want the next government to provide them with water and, at least, build a water tank at every home. They also want the Mbarara-Kikagate road tamarcked.

In Kiruhura district, the two contenders for the LC5 chair are Samuel Katugunda (NRM) and Briton Barugahare (independent).

Residents of Kiruhura want the local government to construct community dams to provide water for their livestock in every cell and piped water for their home use.

They also want market for their milk. Apollo Mabat, a resident, said a litre of milk was now at sh280, but believes that if they got market, the price would rise to about sh1,000.

In Ntungamo district, two candidates are competing for the top district seat. They are Dennis Singahakye, the NRM flag-bearer and FDC’s George Karamira.

The residents are facing three major problems that include lack of safe water, bad village roads and health centres, which they say are not well-equipped and lack doctors.
