THE Police are investigating MP Nandala Mafabi in connection with the violence that rocked last week’s Sironko parliamentary polls.

Mafabi defeated the Minister for the Presidency, Beatrice Wabudeya in the hotly contested race for the Budadiri West parliamentary seat. He polled 23,702 votes against Wabudeya’s 9,336.

The elections in the district were marred by violence, in which several people were injured, and journalist Julius Odeke was shot in the stomach allegedly by security operatives.

On Thursday, four people who were injured in the scuffle accused Mafabi of instigating the violence.

They recorded statements at the Police headquarters in Kampala and said they were living in fear and had fled their homes after receiving threats from Mafabi’s supporters. They include Moses Onyema, George Nandege, Robert Madde and Manuel Wanzira, all residents of Buwaasa sub-county, where the violence took place. They also accused police officers at Bugusege Police post of siding with Mafabi.

In his statement to the Police, Madde said he was assaulted by Mafabi who cut him with a machete on the head and on the leg, and dragged him to Bugusege police post, accusing him of bribing voters.

“I am in the NRM youth league, but Mafabi’s supporters are still hunting down all Movement supporters in Sironko. We are not safe,” Madde said.

The police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba said: “The Inspector General of Police has put up a team to investigate the incident. The Special Investigations Squad is to investigate issues of grievous harm and assault.”

She said the complaints that the local Police had not exhaustively handled the matter would also be investigated.

The director of criminal investigations, Edward Ochom, recently said a total of 668 electoral offences had been reported to the Police and were under investigation.
