THE Jinja central division LC3 chairmanship, one of the hotly-contested seats in the municipality, has drawn a record 11 candidates

The seat is currently held by FDC’s Mubarak Kirunda, who faces DP’s Patrick Mulondo, UPC’s Swaleh Kiswiriri and Grace Kirya from the NRM.

Also in the race are Eric Luyuyo, Hashim Muhamad, Juma Kinyiri, Ahamed Kitimbo, Hannington Mamuto, Muhamad Ssekabira and Richard Kirya, all independents.

However, the race is tight between DP, UPC candidates and the incumbent.

Kirunda has some support for setting up projects like fish landing sites and his initiative of sealing potholes in the town, where he employs several youth.

However, recent media reports that Kirunda had defected to the ruling NRM party after a meeting with Gen. Salim Saleh may affect his chances of being voted back.

Elsewhere, William Ebusa has bigger chances of retaining the Mpumudde/Kimaka division seat though he failed to scoop the ticket in the FDC party primaries that saw Moses Kigenyi trouncing him.

In Walukuba/Masese division, the seat may still go to the opposition but the race is also tight between DP’s Muhamad Musisi Kibuguju, the incumbent, and FDC’s Isma Batabaire.

There are seven candidates tussling it out for the seat, including NRM’s Phillip Bwambale, who wants to reclaim the seat he lost in 2006.

The other tough race is between NRM’s Sula Ssentongo and Steven Wante (independent) for the Bugembe town council seat.
