THE name of Col. Walter Ochora Odoch should be forwarded to the Central Government to be included on the list of national heroes, Gulu district councillors have resolved.

The move is in recognition of Ochora’s struggle for peace and development in Acholi and Uganda in general.

The motion was moved by the LC5 councillor for Lalogi sub-county, Michael Onencan and seconded by Kenneth Nyeko of Ongako sub-county during a special council meeting to pay tribute to Ochora on Thursday.

Thousands of mourners yesterday thronged the district council to pay their last respects to Ochora who died of lung complications last week.

The councillors also suggested that a street in Gulu town be named after Ochora.

Santa Oketa, the LC5 councillor for Bardege and Layibi said Ochora promoted peace in Acholi and countrywide.

He suggested that a monument be constructed in memory of Ochora in Gulu Municipality.

Ochora’s body was received at the district council hall by former district chairman Norbert Mao and the president of the Uganda local government association, John Wycliffe Karazaarwe.

Mao said Ochora as a fearless and generous leader who dared to meet rebel leader Joseph Kony even though Kony wanted him dead.
