NKUMBA Ladies volleyball team is facing a financial crisis as they prepare for the Africa Club Championships due in Nairobi, Kenya March 30-April 11.

“We are still looking for at least sh42m to take part in the event though we are already having intensive training,” said Patrick Ssebuliba, the Nkumba University sports tutor.

The ladies team qualified for the continental show piece by virtue of being last year’s national league champions. They beat Uganda Christian University (UCU) Lady Doves to the title.

Meanwhile, adding to their trophy shelf every weekend has become routine in the UCU volleyball camp after they won yet another three trophies from the Makerere Open that ended on Sunday.

UCU exploited Nkumba’s absence from the event to dispose of all the other ladies’ teams, notably KCC, Nemo-stars and Ndejje in the round robin contest at Makerere.

“This means so much to us because we are building for the upcoming season,” said Nason Bwesigye, the UCU coach.
The Lady Doves did not lose a game, defeating all their three rivals in straight sets to claim top honours.

In a related development, good performances from UCU’s Tom Amau and comeback hero Abraham Tamo handed men’s league champions KAVC a shock defeat in the clubs category final.

This was the first tournament KAVC are playing this season after opting out of the just concluded Kyambogo Open.

Meanwhile, the national team started intensive training last week at the Sharing Youth ground in Nsambya for the forthcoming Zone V All Africa Games qualifiers to be hosted in Kigali, Rwanda March 23-30.
