IBANDA North MP Maj. Guma Gumisiriza has been granted bail. Justice Andrew Bashaija of Mbarara High Court ordered Gumisiriza to execute a non-cash bail sh10m and each of his sureties also executed sh10m not cash.

It is alleged that Gumisiriza and other eight co-accused murdered Ainebyona Moses at Katojo trading center on February 17.

Ainebyona was heading to Katojo trading centre when his vehicle was surrounded by goons alleged to be supporters of Gumisiriza.

Ainebyona was a supporter of Xavier Kyoma who was Gumisiriza’s opponent and the NRM flag-bearer in the Parliamentary election. Kyoma defeated Gumisiriza in the election.

Bashaija also prohibited Gumisiriza from travelling outside the country without leave of court and was also ordered to surrender his passport to court.

He is to report to court every first Wednesday of the month beginning in April.

MPs John Arimpa Kigyagi (Mbarara municipality), Chris Baryomunsi (Kinkizi East), Margaret Muhanga (Kabarole woman) and Nathan Byanyima (of Bukanga) stood surety for Gumisiriza.

Before granting Gumisiriza bail, Justice Bashaija stated “Bail is a constitutional right of the applicant; a suspect in a criminal matter is innocent until he is proved guilty and court is convinced with the circumstances of the bail application.”

Gumisiriza’s bail followed application by his lawyer Alex Candia who said Gumisiriza has never been charged with a criminal office before, he is a citizen of Uganda and had substantial sureties.

Gumisiriza’s co-accused were sent to Nyabuhikye Prison in Ibanda. They are Geoffrey Nsubuga, Joseph Ruhinda, Denis Byarugaba, Afrikano Twesiime, Abdu Kisembo, Milton Tukamushaba, Gerald Mwebembezi, and Apollo Tugume.
