THE Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) won seven seats in Jinja district council in the recently concluded local council elections an increase of one seat the party held in the outgoing council.

The party also retained the LC3 chairmanship of Jinja central division and Buyengo sub-county which were won by Mubarak Kirunda and James Hamba respectively.

The LC3 chair for Mpumudde-Kimaka division in Jinja municipality was won by William Ebusa an FDC leaning independent candidate.

District councillors elected on the FDC ticket include Meddie Mbentyo (Jinja central), Aloysius Mugumira (Buyengo), Ayub Wabika (Budondo), Peter Kamwami (Buwenge town council), Monica Christine Abuze (Jinja municipality East) and Muhammed Katuntubiru (youth).

However, the council comprises 24 councillors with NRM having the majority of the seats while others are independents. NRM’s Frederick Gume was elected LC5 chairman.

Of the 21 Jinja municipal councillors, five belong to the FDC, an increase from two in the previous council.

Meddie Mbentyo, the national spokesman of the FDC youth league who is also one of the district councillors, said the party’s strength had greatly improved in the councils.

“Moving from one to seven seats in council is a great improvement, we shall be able to make an impact,” he said.

Mbentyo explained that the party did not only score improvements in the district and municipal councils but the lower local councils as well.

“We now have three councillors at Budondo sub-county council and five at Buyengo sub-county council,” he said adding that the electorate had realised the importance of the opposition in politics.
