AN outbreak of Black Quarter disease that has killed over 100 heads of cattle in Koboko.

According to Dr. Stephen Onzima, the district veterinary officer, the disease was first reported in Kuluba sub-county in December last year and has spread to all sub-counties in the district.

Onzima expressed fear that the number of infections may escalate because many farmers did not report the cases in time.

He said the disease kills within 48 hours of infection and is hard for farmers to detect it.

“Diseases which normally take a shorter time to kill show few signs,” Onzima said.

Onzima added that animals affected by the disease have fever, pain in the legs, saliva from the mouth and eventually stop feeding, leading to its death.

He attributed the spread of the disease to the dry season.

“Our staff are currently on ground vaccinating cattle against the disease,” he said.

He noted that Kuluba sub-county was the most affected.
