LYDIA Draru, the woman suspected to have killed Maj. Gen. James Kazini, was among inmates who received certificates in recognition for their participation in art works and design at Luzira prison.

The three-day art and design workshop organised by the Uganda National Cultural Centre and Nommo Gallery was aimed at enhancing skills and knowledge in the visual arts among the women inmates.

A total of 40 female inmates were awarded certificates.

Draru told New Vision in an interview at Luzira that she enrolled for the course to ease stress.

“Inmates spend a lot of time doing nothing. I have acquired skills that I will pass on to those who did not attend. I will also use the skills to find employment,” Draru said.

She asked the Government and the organisers of the workshop to design more practical programmes for inmates to keep them busy.

Draru, 29, in an extra-judicial statement last year, confessed to having murdered Kazini who she said was her lover.

Joseph Walugembe, the executive director of Uganda National Cultural Centre, who presided over the awards ceremony, said the project was meant to empower the inmates with skills in creative art and design.
