OVER 50 families in Kyankwanzi district have been rendered homeless after heavy rains destroyed their houses over the weekend.

Property worth millions of shillings was also destroyed in the storm that brought down buildings and killed animals.

The most affected area was Lubiri parish in Kyankwanzi sub-county, where about 30 houses were destroyed by the rains accompanied by a storm last Friday and Saturday.

Two government-aided primary school buildings and two churches, were razed down.

St. Kizito Primary School at Kyankwanzi Chaplaincy had the roofs of the girls’ dormitory and pit-latrine blown off.

Lubiri Primary School also had roofs for five classrooms and a pit-latrine blown off.

Other property destroyed included dairy plants and commercial buildings in Lubiri trading centre.

“Two of our main dairies have been destroyed and the pastoralists are finding it hard to preserve milk. Many cows also have died,” Joseph Byampaka, the LC1 chairperson of Lubiri, said on Monday.

He expressed concern over some of his people whom he said had nothing left.

“Some of the people in the area had their grass thatched houses completely destroyed and some permanent buildings were also affected,” Byampaka said.

“We lost 20 cows, our milk cooler was destroyed and the building also collapsed. We have lost over sh80m,” Charles Ssekiwunga, the manager of Wamala Union Dairy Farm noted.

The Rev. Fr. Joseph Ssesazi of Ranch One attributed the storm to defforestation.
