THE re-election of the Speaker, Edward Ssekandi, as Bukoto Central constituency Member of Parliament has been challenged. His rival, Jude Mbabali, petitioned the High Court in Kampala, citing election malpractice.

Mbabali filed the petition through Lukwago and Co. Advocates.
In the February 18 polls, Ssekandi (NRM) was declared winner by the Electoral Commission (EC) with 11,380 votes, while Mbabali (DP) polled 10,146 votes. Hassan Mwanje (independent) got 1,424.

The petition was filed against Ssekandi and the EC. Mbabali wants court to declare that Ssekandi was “not validly elected” as MP, nullify his victory, and order fresh polls.

He also wants to be awarded costs of the petition.

Mbabali contends that right from the campaign period to polling day, the exercise was characterised by gross irregularities, violence, intimidation and torture, lack of freedom and transparency.

The court’s civil division registrar, Eudes Keitirima, has asked Ssekandi and EC to respond to the allegations within 10 days.

Justice Elizabeth Musoke will preside over the case. Court is yet to set a date for the hearing.
