A ferry operating between Kiyindi landing site in Wakiso district and Buvuma Islands on Lake Victoria, has broken down due to mechanical problems.

Daniel Luwaga, the ferry master said the vessel needed major repairs.
The ferry early this year got stuck in the water after one of its two engines stopped functioning.

The breakdown of the ferry has affected passengers and the business communities who carry out transactions in the area.

Luwaga said the ferry makes two routes daily and carries 80 passengers with a capacity of 65 tonnes.

The Buvuma Resident District Commissioner, Apollo Bwebale, appealed to the Government to replace the ferry with a bigger one that would cater for the growing business in the area.

“We are an autonomous district and we deserve attention from the Government,” Bwebale said, adding that passengers had increased since the elevation of the area to district status.

He said people had resorted to using canoe boats while others had suspended movements until the problem is rectified.

He apologised for the inconvenienced and urged members to remain calm.
