NTARE School in Mbarara mu¬nicipality has been closed after students turned rowdy follow¬ing failure to participate in the Ankole regional COPA Coca-Cola championships.

The Police on Tuesday fired tear gas at the students who had camped inside the school at Lion’s Empire, accusing the school administration of stop¬ping them from participating in the ongoing regional football championships.

It had earlier been announced that, although they had been knocked out at the zonal lev¬el to qualify to represent the district, the school would par¬ticipate in the championships since they were the hosts.

The competitions are being held in Kakyeka stadium and Ntare School playground.

The school administration, with the help of the Police, re¬solved to send all the students home to avoid a riot that would result in destruction of prop¬erty. The head teacher, Hum¬phrey Ahimbisibwe, refused to talk to journalists over the is¬sue. A board meeting was con¬vened at the school yesterday.

In Rukungiri district, the se¬curity committee also closed Kyamakanda Secondary School after students went on rampage in nearby villages and slaughtered people’s domes¬tic animals. The committee, chaired by the resident dis¬trict commissioner, Purikeria Muhindo, closed the school.

Julius Salube, the district Po¬lice commander, said the stu¬dents invaded Kihogo, Rwen¬kuraijo and Kanywa villages, near the school and destroyed people’s property, including slaughtering over 25 goats.

He said the students went on rampage after having supper on Tuesday evening.

They camped on one of the hills about 3km from the school and roasted the goats.

Salube said the students ac¬cused the head teacher, Jimmy Turyagyenda, of not providing any meat for them.

“We are still receiving com¬plaints from the families that lost goats. So far 25 goats have been reported missing,” Salube said
