SAID Mawa burst into life in the closing round to wrestle the Mehta Golf Open title from Fred Wanzala in Lugazi on Sunday.

Mawa who was four strokes behind day one joint leaders Wanzala and Emma Opio, fired a second round four under par 66 to square off with his Jinja Club friend Wanzala on 139.

Mawa birdied the 16th, 17th and 18th holes to tie the contest as Emma Opio slipped to third position.

The stalemate resulted into a sudden death play-off on hole 18 which Mawa won when he shot a par while Wanzala bogeyed.

“I thought I was going to win when l led by two strokes at hole 16 but those bogeys affected me so much.

I actually lost on it 16th, 17th and 18th holes. I enjoyed the high level of competition. The best man won,” Opio remarked.

Opio completed a top three finish for Jinja Golf Club members with 143, four strokes off the pace.

John Waigo was fourth and Ian Odokonyero shared fifth place with Beus Willy on 148.
