HEAD teachers who have failed to remit funds towards the sustainability of science and mathematics subjects in secondary schools risk being sacked, an official in the education ministry has warned.

John Agaba, the commissioner in charge of secondary schools, sounded the warning on Tuesday at Kololo Secondary School while launching a career guide magazine and new teaching guidelines for science and mathematics teachers.

“We send funds to secondary schools but some head teachers have failed to deduct the money and remit it towards the teaching of science and mathematics,” Agaba said.

He explained that each school under the Universal Secondary Education is supposed to deduct sh1,000 from each student per term and remit it towards the implementation of the secondary science and mathematics teacher’s programme.

The programme is under the education ministry and is supported by the Japanese government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

It was implemented in 2005 to improve the teaching ability of mathematics and science teachers, which will in turn lead to improved learners’ performance.
