THE Democratic Party (DP) president, Norbert Mao, and six other party members, who were remanded in Luzira Prison on Monday, were yesterday transferred to Nakasongola Prison.

The move followed a threat by DP youth to storm Luzira Prison to demonstrate against the incarceration of their party leaders.

Mao and his co-accused were sent to Luzira Prison as the Police arrested over 100 people over the walk-to-work demonstration.

Mao was detained together with the party spokesperson, Kenneth Paul Kakande, John Mary Sebuwufu, Kamya Kasozi, Moses Bigirwa, Elvis Kintu and Taddeo Kasule on charges of inciting violence.

“For the safety of Mao, his group and that of the other inmates, it was deemed fit to have Mao and his colleagues moved to a safer place,” the prisons spokesperson, Frank Baine, noted.

Baine said Nakasongola was selected because it is one of the new and modern facilities befitting Mao’s status. He added that Mao’s family, lawyer and top party officials would be allowed to visit him.
