THE Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) has urged security organisations to respect the laws governing the country.

The secretary to the commission, Gordon Mwesigye, said members of security organisations need to understand the developments in the constitutional growth of Uganda, in order to appreciate the need for a strong culture of constitutionalism and the rule of law.

Mwesigye explained that the majority of Ugandans do not fully understand their Constitution because many of them were not involved in its making.

He was addressing members of security organisations at Travelers Inn in Fort Portal on Tuesday.

He, however, noted that the 1962 Constitution was good in many aspects especially on the checks and balances between the executive, legislation and judicially, but said it had weaknesses on the issue of federalism.
