PRIME Minister Prof. Apolo Nsibambi will today attend an African Road Safety Programme in Malaba, Kenya.Nsibambi will also hold discussions with his Kenyan counterpart, Raila Odinga.

The African Road Safety Corridor Initiative is aimed to end road accidents on highways.

It will be unveiled at Malaba Township Primary School.

The launch followed a report that indicated that more than one million people die in road accidents every year.

Of the casualties, 70% occur in developing countries with 65% of the deaths being pedestrians and 35% are children. The report estimates that six million will die and 60 million will be injured in the next 10 years in developing countries unless action is taken.

The study forecasts show that by 2020, road accidents will be the third leading cause of deaths and disability around the world.

One to three percent of Uganda’s gross domestic product is spent on accident victims.

Developing countries currently lose more than $100 billion every year on road accidents.

James Amani, a truck driver blamed the Kenya highway road authority for failing to maintain the Northern corridor that have resulted into potholes which have led to increased road accidents.

Drivers appealed to the Kenyan government to intervene and seal the potholes.

Organisers from the World Bank and Total said Nsibambi will be accompanied by minister John Nasasira of Works and Emormor Augustine Osuban the Teso cultural leader.
