PRINCE John Barigye of Ankole underwent a successful kidney transplant in an Indian hospital on Monday, a close family source has disclosed.

Prince Andrew Tendo, a cousin to Barigye, told New Vision that the prince was steadily recovering.

“We are happy and grateful to the doctors who operated on him,” Tendo added.

Barigye was accompanied by his sister, Princess Rosemary Kirungi and a donor (name withheld) who offered a kidney. The operation followed intense tests and examination by the medical team in India.

Relatives said Barigye had been having problems with one of his kidneys but was closely monitored by physicians here and abroad before he went to India in March.

The chairman of the Ankole Cultural Trust, William Katatumba, said the prince would return home after he has fully recovered.

Katatumba appealed to President Yoweri Museveni to allow the restoration of the Ankole monarchy (Obugabe).”

Barigye was crowned king of Ankole in 1993 but the Government immediately nullified the restoration of the kingdom on grounds that the kingship was unpopular among most of the Banyankole.

Justus Muhanguzi, the spokesperson of the trust, said the monarchy is popular and should be restored to ensure proper cultural leadership and development of the Banyankole.
