THE Government will increase capitation grants for all pupils and students under free education, according to the education ministry’s permanent secretary Francis Xavier Lubanga. He said it will be increased from 1,800 to 2,300 per day.

Lubanga said with the increasing inflation in the country, the education and finance ministries have made provisions in next financial year’s budget that comes into effect on July 1.

Lubanga announced this on Tuesday at the commissioning of Kabale-Bukinda Core Primary Teachers College in Kabale. Education minister Namirembe Bitamazire commissioned the college.

Every child under USE in private schools is allocated sh4,700 per term and those in Government-aided schools get sh4,100.

Lubanga said the increase in capitation for students is long overdue and it is necessary for the improvement of the quality of education in the country.

Bitamazire said the Government was committed to improving facilities in all primary teachers’ colleges. She said the Government has constructed and equipped laboratories in all its 45 primary teachers colleges, to improve the teaching of science. Some colleges have also got new classrooms, dormitories, and tutors’ houses constructed.

She added that the Government would continuously invest heavily in the education sector. It currently allocates about sh1.4 trillion of its national budget to the education ministry.
