A group of international doctors are providing free treatment to women who have fistula at Kibuli Muslim Hospital.

The doctors from Egypt, Canada, Mexico, Jordan and Burkina Faso arrived last Saturday and have since been attending to patients. They will be here for a week.

According to Mohammed Yassin, a doctor and a professor of urology at Ain Shamus University in Egypt, 60 patients will receive treatment. He said fistula, which mainly occurs in women, has affected over two million women in Africa.

“Every year, with help from the International Continence Society and the Egyptian government, we visit several countries and treat women suffering from fistula. This time, we are in Uganda,” he said.

Irene Wamala, a fistula patient who underwent surgery, said she developed pain in her abdomen, which led to the removal of her uterus three years ago.

“I got swellings in my stomach that felt like hard stones. They later developed into small blood clots. I became constipated then the wall between my vagina and anus tore and I started passing out soft stool through my vagina,” said Wamala.
