LAWRENCE Muhenda prevailed over his national team-mate Adolf Muhumuza at home as Toro Golf Club members took to the course in commemoration of the late Brigadier Noble Mayombo last weekend.

Muhenda, who fired 67 to take a four-shot lead over Muhumuza on the first day, followed it up with 70 for an aggregate of 138, beating his rival by two strokes.

The event was marred by a low turn up following riots that rocked many parts of the country that golfers from Kampala, Jinja and Entebbe could not travel on Friday as they had planned.

Winners from other groups were determined by their nett scores which were surprisingly much higher than the gross scores of the top golfers.

Toro club chairman Smart Bwango argued that the poor scores should not be blamed on the course.

“It has been raining here so the course is in good shape. The greens were running which could have been a challenge to many competitors,” Bwango stated.
The Mayombo Memorial event which has been upgraded to Uganda Golf Union (UGU) status had 47 competitors including a few from Entebbe, Jinja and Kasese.

The annual event is held in honour of former military intelligence chief and Vision Group board chairman Mayombo who was a great promoter of Toro Club.

The fallen soldier was never a golfer but a darling of Toro golfers and often presided over tee off ceremonies at the Fort Portal club.

Bwango said they intend to further raise the profile of the event to increase participation.
