THE crime rate has risen since Uganda Revenue Authority suspended clearing goods at the Malaba border, according to the RDC and Police records.

According to the Malaba Police station, cases of robbery had shot up from six to 45, while theft had increased from 10 to 40 cases per month.

The Tororo resident district commissioner, Godfrey Damulira Kyeyune, disclosed this when he hosted the first deputy prime minister, Eria Kategaya and works minister John Nasasira at Malaba Police Station on Friday.

In June 2009, URA suspended clearance of cargo trucks at Malaba border because the customs parking yard was in a deplorable state.

Over 500 clearing firms that operated at the border town, were advised to move to Mbale or Jinja town to permit the rehabilitation work of the customs yard.

Damulira, who is also the district security committee chairperson, said although the customs yard has since been rehabilitated, goods clearance has remained suspended.

Kategaya said his office would follow up the matter to have the suspension lifted.

Nasasira expressed concern that his office was not informed about the suspension of cargo clearance at Malaba.

He, however, insisted that rehabilitation work on the customs parking yard would not warrant the suspension of cargo clearance business.

“Cargo clearance would be handled at the two private parking yards nearby,” Nasasira said.
