THE mayor of Kira town council on Thursday won another term. Mamerito Mugerwa, an NRM candidate, garnered 9,403 votes, beating six others in a hotly- contested race.

THE mayor of Kira town council on Thursday won another term. Mamerito Mugerwa, an NRM candidate, garnered 9,403 votes, beating six others in a hotly- contested race.
Democratic Party’s Ben Mayanja came second with 7,692 votes, while Hassan Lubega got 2,826votes, Daudi Mugalya got 2,691votes, Hassan Kirya got 430 votes and Guster Mukasa got 259 votes.
Elections in Kira Town Council, Wakiso district were earlier cancelled after voters complained about alleged ballot stuffing.
The electorate also accused the Electoral Commission of inter-changing ballot papers at different polling stations. Generally, the elections for the mayor and councillors were characterised by low voter turn-up.
After announcing the results at the Wakiso district headquarters, the returning officer Margaret Kugonza commended the candidates for being disciplined.
“During the campaigns candidates exhibited the highest degree of discipline. They focused more on preaching their manifestos than attacking individuals,†she added.
In an interview with Saturday Vision, Kugonza also said they had not received any candidate contesting the results.
Mugerwa attributed his victory to working with security men to maintain law and order in the area. “People of Kira town council want someone who will protect them and their property,†he said.
Meanwhile, another NRM flag-bearer, Stanley Omwonyo Oribdhogu, won the Okoro County parliamentary residual elections.
He polled 8,233 votes, while independents Tonny Rugette garnered (7,766votes), Alex Koi (6,922 votes) and Benson Okumu Oluyu had 551 votes.
In Mbale Municipality the FDC candidate Musa Mansa won the mayoral seat.
He polled 1,699 votes, NRM’s Abdul Magola 1,007 votes, Charles Wafula 1,171 votes and Moses Kisoro 596 votes.
In the evening, Mansa’s and Magola’s supporters stoned the polling officials at Namaata health centre polling station, forcing them to flee, but Police restored order. The Police also arrested Mansa and detained him at Mbale Central Police Station.
Andrew Wakale, the presiding officer, accused Mansa of causing the confusion. “Mansa was fuelling the chaos at the polling station and he wanted the counting exercise to be halted,†he explained.
Shortly after the returning officer, Umar Kiyimba, declared that Musa Mansa had won the race, his supporters stormed the deputy RDC’s office demanding him his release, arguing, that he is innocent.
