Dear Dentist,
My wedding is next week, but I do not have time to whiten my teeth. Can I get an instant solution?

Dear Liz,
THE best solution is to get a one-hour chair side bleaching appointment which you can schedule with your dentist during the lunch break. This would make your teeth whiter by at least by four to six shades, which is fantastic. Teeth are polished with pumice, a grainy material that remove plaque from the surface of the teeth.

l Your mouth will be isolated with gauze to keep your teeth dry during the procedure. Retractors may also be used to keep your cheeks, lips and tongue away from the whitening solution.

l A barrier is placed along your gum line to protect it from the whitening solution.
l The teeth are then coated with the whitening solution on the front surface of the teeth.

You may choose to use either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide as a bleaching agent. Many whitening products require a curing light to add heat to the solution and activate the peroxide.

It will then be left on the teeth for 30 to 60 minutes, or reapplied in specific increments of time for up to one hour, depending on the brand.

l Once the optimum shade has been reached, or the maximum application time has passed, the teeth are rinsed with water and a fluoride application may be used to help ease the sensitivity some people experience with tooth whitening.

l Children under the age of 16 (because the pulp is still large in size) and pregnant women should not undertake this procedure.

Tooth whitening does not usually change the colour of fillings and other restorative materials. It does not affect porcelain, ceramics, or dental gold.

However, it can slightly affect restorations made with composite materials, cements and dental amalgams. It can restore colour of fillings, porcelain and other ceramics when stained.
