THE $32m office block for the president, vice-president and prime minister will be ready for use by the end of June.

Comprising two 11-floor towers on 16,000 square metres, the structure is located on Sir. Apollo Kaggwa Road in Kampala. The China Yanjian Group is the contractor.

Works minister John Nasasira, his deputy John Byabagambi, the permanent secretary, Charles Muganzi and the ministry’s commissioner for public structures, Harry Kazahura, inspected the structure last week.

The offices of the President and the Vice-President are located on the same tower but on separate floors. Both offices are expansive with a view of Kampala and with adjoining rooms to be occupied by secretaries.

On the same wing are the Cabinet room, library, conference rooms and VIP lounges. A parking yard to accommodate 500 cars is also being built.

Following the inspection, Kazahura said the structure was 85% complete.

He advised that an electronic security system be installed to monitor movement from one floor to another and that tiles instead of carpets be used in the corridors as the latter would be hard to maintain.
