THE Police have banned any procession organised by Forum for Democratic Change supporters to welcome their party president, Dr. Kizza Besigye, at Entebbe Airport.
Besigye is expectd to jet into the country tomorrow from Nairobi.

Besigye, who was discharged from Nairobi Hospital last Friday, will arrive at 9:00am, a day to the swearing in of President Yoweri Museveni at Kololo Airstrip.

Addressing journalists at the party headquarters yesterday, the party’s vice-president, Salaamu Musumba, said Besigye would arrive at Entebbe Airport on a Kenya Airway’s flight number KQ410.

Speaking to New Vision yesterday, Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba said they do not expect many people to welcome Besigye at the airport.

“This is a very busy week and we do not need any one to disrupt the ongoing arrangements. We expect Besigye to be welcomed by a few party officials as he was escorted to the airport when he went for medication,” Nabakooba said.

She said they expect at least 13 heads of state and other important people to attend the swearing-in ceremony on Thursday.

Musumba said Besigye’s return is not meant to disrupt the swearing-in ceremony as many have been alleging.

“Besigye is returning to rest as recommended by his doctor and to appear in court to answer charges of disobeying lawful orders and inciting violence. He also wants to greet his supporters before going for more medical treatment,” she said.

Besigye was arrested by the Police at Mulago round-about and sprayed with pepper and tear gas.

Musumba said Besigye was not in good condition. She added that after a few days, Besigye will be flown out of the country for more treatment.

“He feels pain in his eyes because the stitches were not removed well. The doctors recommended that he goes for an operation. We also need to know the type of chemical that was sprayed,” she said.

Musumba said they would pick Besigye from Entebbe by car and drive through the city up to his home in Kasangati. She said they do not need permission from the Police since they were only welcoming their leader.

“What is the permission for? The Police should run after criminals not peaceful people. He was refused to walk and drive. Now it is like they do not want him to fly back home. We are ready for anything if the Government has plans for him,” she said.

She said Besigye does not need the helicopter offered by the Government. “He does not need it and we can never use it,” Musumba said.

Before the press conference, MPs Geoffrey Ekanya, Nandala Mafabi, Patrick Amuriat and the party’s mobiliser, Gen. Mugisha Muntu, walked from their homes via Kampala Road to the FDC headquarters without interference.
