WILL my 16 points in arts enable me to do a degree in accounting and finance?

I did HEI/ART in 2005 and scored 16 points. Will I be admitted to Kyambogo University for a bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance or diploma in business administration? Salimu Bagoole

When calculating the cut-off points for university admission, one’s performance in particular subjects, rather than the overall points, matter. This is because subjects are categorised into “essential”, “relevant” and “others” and each carry different marks depending on the course. Teddy Tumukunde, an assistant registrar at Kyambogo University, says your chances of being given BSc Accounting and Finance will depend on how you performed in economics and history. These two are the only subjects in your combination that are part of the subjects required for BSc Accounting and Finance. The other subjects relevant to this course, which you did not study at A’ level, are all sciences. She says you can be admitted for the diploma in business administration because all that is required for this diploma is at least two principal passes in any A’level subjects.

I missed a mathematics paper in my UCE exams and was given Division Y. I contacted UNEB and they said it was okay for me to use the certificate. I continued with studies until I got a master’s degree in 1990. But these days I see universities advertising that students with Division Y are not admitted. What is the fate of some of us who were allowed to study? Are we safe to stand for MP? Alex Nangumya

James Ochola, the spokesperson of the Electoral Commission, says one’s academic performance (grades) does not matter as long they have the minimum required certificate that is verified by UNEB and National Council for Higher Education. The minimum academic level required to contest for MP is A’level. Ochola says if your certificates are verified, you can present them and get nominated.

I applied for Makerere University’s Bachelor of Information Technology. I wanted to study from the Jinja Campus yet it seems to share course codes with the main campus. Do I have to submit another form?
Leo

According to Christopher Mayanja, an official of Makerere University’s academic registrar’s department, the course codes for up-country campuses are different from those at the main campus. Therefore, you were supposed to fill in the code for Jinja. You can submit a new form only if you want to apply for private sponsorship because the selection for government scholarships has been concluded.

I scored O in Economics, C in Luganda and F in History and Geography plus a GP point in 2007. What course can I apply for? Denis

According to the National Council for Higher Education rules, the minimum requirement for diploma admission in arts courses is two principal passes. But you got only one principal pass; this means you do not qualify for admission. You can only start with a certificate course and upgrade to a diploma later. Alternatively, you can apply through the mature age entry scheme, where the minimum requirement is at least 25 years of age.
