THE Government of Uganda has nominated the former regional affairs state minister, Isaac Musumba, as candidate for the post of secretary general of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC).

Musumba, who is also the former Member of Parliament for Buzaaya county, Kamuli district, said yesterday that he was nominated during a Cabinet meeting about three weeks ago.

The post will fall vacant in January 2014 after the current Secretary General, Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, completes two terms in office.

The election of the new secretary general will take place during the 40th session of the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) in mid 2013.

OIC is the second largest inter-governmental organisation after the United Nations with a membership of 57 states spread over four continents.

Musumba, who called at The New Vision Head Office in Industrial Area, clarified that the organisation was not for Muslims, but all countries with Muslim populations.

“It is an organisation for development and diplomacy,” he said.

Musumba said the secretary general is the chief coordinator of heads of state of the OIC. He appealed to Ugandans to support his candidature.

“Uganda has never had somebody to this level before. The position is going to enhance our international profile if we get it,” Musumba said.

Efforts to get a comment from government officials yesterday failed.

Musumba holds a masters degree in law (tax Grouping) from the University of London and a bachelors degree in law with honours from Makerere University.

OIC was established upon a decision of the historical summit which took place in Rabat, Kingdom of Morocco on September 25,1969. Uganda joined the organisation in 1973.
