THERE was a time when styling hair was a thing for the foreign soccer players. As Italy‘s Roberto Baggio waved his divine ponytail for the whole world to see, our Majid Musisi did not seem to care about his hair.

First forward to 2011 and the Uganda Cranes team is dotted with different kind of hairstyles.
Well, times have changed. The World looks at icons from sports such as style icons.

To completely cement your mark on the world today, you have to rule on the pitch as well as the fashion arena. The two classic examples of twenty-first century super-star turned super-style-icons are Christianio Ronaldo and David Beckham. You can tell by the different trendy hair styles that the demand for stylish soccer players has influenced Cranes players.

Cornrows

If you have been following Cranes, you definitely know that cornrows are David Obua’s thing.

But, years before Obua became a known football player, two Nigerian soccer players made cornrows their trade mark hair style. Jay Jay Okocha and Nkwanko Kanu made this whole cornrow trend popular.

Their cornrows were such an issue to the extent they attracted criticism from some Nigerian officials. The officials felt the hair was not culturally accepted and promoted homosexuality. The criticism was followed by threats of banning players with unusual hair dos from the pitch. But, the players were not deterred, cornrows lived on.

Cornrows were seen as something for black and may be mixed race footballers. But things changed in 2003 when David Bechkam was England captain. He got cornrows and the media went into a frenzy. His cornrows were popularly known as golden braids and they became popular all over Europe.

The dreadlocks
Whoever still thinks dreadlocks are a thing for Rastafarians, check out defenders Nestroy Kizito and Hassan Wasswa. Perhaps defenders have some kind of attachment to dread locks. Remember Cameroon ’s defender Rigobert Song? If you remember him, you definitely recall his dreadlocks.

But, Kizito and Wasswa should stand warned, long dread locks can be disastrous. During the 2006 world cup, Peter Crouch managed to score a goal for England against Trinidad and Tobago by pulling Brent Sacho’s dread locks. Hope the boys keep their dreads intact.

Faux Hawk hair style

Looking at Joseph Kabagame, you will probably think he has a mohawk but he has the faux hawk. It is possibly the most popular hair style in soccer.

Based on the idea of a mohawk, the style keeps the strip of the stripe up the middle of the head that stands up, but also keeps short hair present on the sides and the back of the head. Players like David Villa, Cesc Fabregas, Fernando Torres, David Bechkam, Christianio Ronaldo have or have had the faux hawk.

The rugged afro
You’ve probably seen Chelsea ’s Jon Obi Mikel and thought he has unkempt hair. Well, it is actually a hair style.

It is the most popular hair style amongst the Cranes boys. Tony Maweje, Steven Bengo, Godfrey Walusimbi all have this kind of hair.

Shaved head

Looking at Geoffrey Massa with his shaven head, you can quickly relate him to Argentina’s Juan Sebastian Veron who kept his hair completely shaved. Zinedine Zidane also had a shaven head for some parts of his career.

Well, Zidane might not count because he was already bold. What other choice of hair style did he have?
