THE First Lady and newly-appointed Minister for Karamoja Affairs, Janet Museveni, has attributed Uganda’s success story in the fight against HIV/AIDs to the ABC strategy.

The strategy advocates for abstinence before marriage, being faithful in marriage and condom use for those with several partners.

She said by now, the HIV/AIDS prevalence rate would be much lower or even at zero if people had complied with the approach. The multi-pronged campaign was led by President Yoweri Museveni and greatly contributed to the reduction of the scourge in the 1990s.

She noted that the ABC approach enabled dissemination of a clear message to the people, especially the youth, by encouraging them not to engage in pre-marital sex. This experience, she said, could serve as a lesson to other countries in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

She, however, regretted the current HIV/AIDS prevalence rate which has stagnated at 6.5%, which she attributed to complacency.
“When they got the ARVs, they changed their lifestyles again,” she said.

Mrs Museveni was on Tuesday speaking during an interview by the Rev. Dr. Yesu Bandela, the President of the Gospel Association of India, at State House, Nakasero.
She explained that the ABC response to HIV/AIDS, which discourages pre-marital sex, was in line with the Christian teaching that “true love waits”.

She said the power that enables the youth to abstain is the same power that prevents them from engaging in ungodly habits like alcoholism and drug abuse.

The First Lady has also initiated parenting seminars, orphan care, youth guidance and counselling to fight against HIV/AIDs.

She talked about the Government’s commitment to get Uganda out of poverty, become self-sustaining and with a transformed economy that will ensure better quality of life for the people.

Mrs Museveni also welcomed EarthWise Ferries Uganda’s decision to construct a ferry to ply Lake Victoria waters. She said it would provide employment, revitalise the country’s economy and reduce transport costs.
