PARLIAMENT has been advised to pass a Bill on food and nutrition to address malnutrition.

The appeal was made by Prof. Joyce Kakuramatsi of the Food and Nutrition department of Makerere University.

“A food and nutrition policy, which we worked on for about 15 years is still sitting on the shelves,” said Kakuramatsi.

She said the policy would compel the Government to consider proper nutrition as one of the engines for development.
Kakuramatsi added that the policy would also force the Government to inject more funds into food production to promote food security.

The Uganda food and nutrition policy was formulated to fight malnutrition and poverty.

She said malnutrition was retarding development in the country, adding that Uganda has a high level of stunted growth among children.

“If we are malnourished as children, we will be malnourished adults. That means we cannot contribute to the national development,” Kakuramatsi said.

Kyambogo University lecturer Peter Milton said: “Mothers should ensure good nutrition before, during and after conception.”
