The Dairy Development Authority and the Food and Agriculture Organisation have launched a plan to improve milk production in the country.

The national dairy strategy for 2011-2015 aims at increasing milk productivity, enhance dairy market and value-addition.

It also targets at creating an enabling environment and strengthening the sector’s institutional capacity.

Bright Rwamirama, the animal husbandry state minister, said the Government was emphasising capacity building among dairy farmers to raise productivity and the quality of milk to meet the local and global demand for dairy products.

He, however, cautioned milk traders against inflating the prices, saying they pay farmers peanuts.

“The farm-gate price for milk is between sh250 and sh350 per litre, but it is sold at sh1,000 and above,” noted Rwamirama at a validation workshop for the strategy at Mosa Courts Apartments in Kampala last week.
