JAS Mangat’s strong showing in the Kenya Safari Rally over the weekend has sent shock waves among local competitors ahead of the Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally next month.

National champion Nasser Mutebi, who watched Mangat in Kenya, singled him out as the man to beat in the Pearl rally.

“Mangat is a class above. The man has improved a lot. He will certainly give us a run for our money. I have got to thoroughly prepare before I even think of taking him on in the Pearl rally,” Mutebi remarked.

Mangat finished second to Kenyan Carl Tundo, beating highly rated Jamie Whyte, Conrad Rautenbach and Ian Duncan. In pursuit of better competition this season, the Kampala based driver holds a Kenyan license.

Ronald Ssebuguzi had contrasting fortunes in the race that was the fourth round of the Africa Rally Championship.

Ssebuguzi finished 14th, having suffered an eight-minute penalty at the spectator stage in Nairobi on Friday.

Ssebuguzi, who forfeited the Southern Motor Club Rally in Masaka last month, managed to score a paltry 10 National Rally Championship (NRC) points.

He disposed Edson Munghereza from second position at 110, a massive 110 points behind championship leader Susan ‘Super Lady’ Muwonge.

The Pearl Rally is most likely to shake up the standings as the competitors who will complete the race will enjoy 40% bonus points.
